Should the kingdom of heaven be involved in the affairs of the earth or is our purpose to passively stand back and wait to be evacuated out of the earth having invested nothing to make society, our neighborhood, or the workplace better? I say the question is not ‘what would Jesus do’ but rather “what do we have Jesus doing”. I am finding myself compelled to share my thoughts on kingdom living. The cry within my heart is to let the Christ in me participate in this world. When I listen, the kingdom within is crying out against injustice. The kingdom hears the hurting souls and longs to love the bruised and injured. While darkness is all around, the light is shining also.
We are salt
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? Matthew 5:13.
The world needs some salt; people who can selflessly as Christ integrate into this society to make it better. We savory people do not just interject ourselves into social events or align ourselves with political positions for personal gain. We are seasoning and if we let Christ lead us, we will make a significant impact without undermining or detracting from it with self-serving recognition. It takes wisdom which Christ will give us if we ask for it.
Jesus teaches us that he was the light of the world and he gave us the ability to light up this world on his behalf. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14. Our presence in this earth should bring wisdom, insight, vision, and creativity. We should be peacemakers, voices of reason, sought after for our insight.
I do not believe as a kingdom resident that I am alive at this moment to support or condemn the world but rather I am here to assure that the attributes of Christ which include loving, long-suffering, kind, humble, selfless, fair and just are lived out in full view. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16.
Jesus is in the earth. He is living in this world everyday through the lives of people. Those who are awakened to the kingdom within understand this truth and feel the responsibility to not just represent him correctly but to BE him. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Col 1:27
